Belgian Malinois suit active households that want a faster, higher drive dog and have the structure to match. Dobermans and Rottweilers fit families that want presence and calm. How placement works

It starts with a private conversation with Wade about your home, your children, your staff, and your daily routine. If a current dog fits, Wade delivers it personally and stays with your family through the transition: commands, protocols, routines, and the rules your kids need to know. If no dog meets the standard for your home, we wait. Twelve placements a year. By application. See the dogs currently available for placement.

Most rankings of family protection breeds are written by people who have never placed one. This list comes from years of putting finished dogs into homes with children. Ranked by how often the breed is the right answer for a family, not by how it looks on a list.

1. German Shepherd

The default family protection dog for a reason. Large enough to stop a conversation at the door, calm enough to sleep under the kitchen table. Patient with children, reserved with strangers, and the easiest of the five for a household with no handling experience. German Shepherd protection dogs are our most common family placement.

2. Rottweiler

Underrated by companies that do not place them. A finished Rottweiler is quiet, deliberate, and devoted to its household. Heavier than a Shepherd, slower to alarm, and nearly impossible to move once it has decided. Right for families who want presence over speed. Rottweiler protection dogs are placed by application like every other dog here.

3. Doberman

Fast, clean coated, and glued to its people. The Doberman reads a room faster than any breed on this list and settles faster once the room is safe. Best for active families and executives who travel with the dog. Doberman protection dogs suit homes that want a protector who is also a shadow.

4. Dutch Shepherd

Rare, athletic, and steady. Less intense than a Malinois, more compact than a German Shepherd. A finished Dutch Shepherd is a strong choice for a family with older children who want a dog that can keep up outdoors and switch off indoors. See Dutch Shepherd protection dogs.

5. Belgian Malinois

The most capable working dog alive and the one most often placed in the wrong home. A Malinois needs a household that will work it daily. For the right family, usually one with a dedicated primary handler and a large property, nothing is better. For most families with young children, a German Shepherd is the better answer. Belgian Malinois protection dogs are placed only where they fit.

We place only breeds we can source as stable finished adults, and only the five above. Companies that sell one or two breeds will tell you the others do not meet their standard. Not a guard dog

A guard dog protects a place: a fence line, a gate, an estate while you are away. If that is what you need, see our guard dogs for sale. A family protection dog protects people and lives with them. It holds obedience under noise, ignores the pool party, and responds to a real threat on command.

Not a sport dog with titles

An IGP or Schutzhund title proves a dog can perform on a field with a sleeve. It does not prove the dog will hold in a dark driveway with a child behind it, or that it will stand down when told. Many titled dogs make poor house dogs. We test for the house, not the field.

Not a puppy you will train later

A puppy is a bet. You will not know its nerves, its health, or its temperament for eighteen months, and most do not finish. Priority 1 Canine does not sell puppies and does not sell training programs. Every dog here is a finished adult, selected from thousands and proven in a real home before it is offered.

Not an alarm system

Cameras record. Alarms call. Neither one stands between your child and the door. A protection dog is only as good as the handoff. Wade Morrell delivers every Priority 1 Canine dog himself and works at your home for three full days, with a fourth day if your family needs it. The dog stays with your family from the first night.

Day 1: Your home, your dog, your family. Wade walks the house and grounds, sets up equipment, and covers care: feeding, grooming, and monthly and yearly vet care. Your family meets the dog with low pressure time, a walk and a ball. Then three rounds of obedience: Wade demonstrates, then your family works the dog, with questions answered between every round. The dog sleeps at your home that night.

Day 2: Protection outside. Obedience first. Then protection training: the command to engage and stopping a threat in front of you, with recovery time and questions between rounds. After lunch the dog learns your property: every entry and exit, a perimeter threat assessment, and a perimeter protection scenario on your own grounds.
